Order of operations is taught poorly in school. As a high school teacher, I find I need to un- and re-teach it to every group of students.
Going to a PEMA system reduces a lot of headaches later on (like how to solve an equation with a single variable, when you can and can’t distribute, or operational analogies between arithmetic and geometric sequences and means). And really, Parentheses and Grouping are both misnomers. That first ‘level’ does include parentheses and other forms of grouping, but also functions, like sin(x) or f(x).
